Think back to “The Battle of Bataan”
Let us remember the lives of those who were overlooked but were truly heroic on the Day of Valor. Araw ng kagitingan, also known as Bataan Day or Bataan Corregidor Day, is a Philippine national holiday commemorating the fall of Bataan during WWII. Although it used to be celebrated on April 9, it was moved to April 6, 2018 in 2009 to avoid clashing with Maundy Thursday.
In accordance with Executive Order No. 203, s. Every year on April 9th, since 1987, Araw ng Kagitingan has been observed. Section 466 of Proclamation No. 466 In 1989, the Philippine Veterans Week was established to "promote, preserve, and memorialize the principles, ideals, and deeds of the Filipino war veteran as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country, particularly among the youth of the land."
The week-long commemoration is an opportunity to remember not only Filipino war veterans who died or served their country, but also those who served honorably in the military in times of war or peace. This is to express our gratitude for their efforts in preserving our sovereignty and ensuring our national security.
What has been etched in our history will not fade in days, weeks, months, years, or even centuries. So, rather than squandering this day, let us enrich ourselves and continue to be brave in the face of the world's challenges. As like Vice President Leni Robredo said "Walang Pilipinong kailangang maging magiting mag-isa. Sama sama tayo. Tulong-tulong tayo."
